Tuesday, October 6, 2015
I am writing to tell you about an unfortunate incident that occurred this morning on one of our school buses. An Oakridge Lower Elementary student behaved aggressively and unsafely by hitting and kicking other students. The bus was parked within the Upper Elementary School bus loop. The bus driver put herself between the offending student and other students to ensure the safety of everyone involved. The remaining Lower Elementary students on the bus were transferred to another bus and transported to their school. A few of our students incurred minor bumps and bruises.
School staff called the police after the offending student bolted from the bus. They quickly recovered the student and met with the student and the parents. After caring for the students with bumps and bruises, school staff contacted their parents personally.
I have reviewed this situation thoroughly and while I am dismayed by the unsafe behavior, I am extremely proud of the conduct of our bus driver. Her immediate action to resolve the situation was according to procedures learned at training provided by the district. While upsetting for the students, they also responded according to practiced drill procedures.
The safety of our students is of utmost concern. Please contact me directly if you have any questions or concerns.
Keeping you informed,
