Oakridge Board of Education is Accepting Applications to Fill Vacant Seat

The Oakridge Public Schools Board of Education is accepting applications to fill a vacant seat due to the resignation of Board President, Steve Roomsburg.  OPS Superintendent Tom Livezey said, “Steve is a pillar in the Oakridge community, and is a servant leader for many youth organizations in Egelston Township.  He is a champion for children.”  Roomsburg recently retired from the construction trades industry, where he served as a union business agent.   He has served on the Oakridge Board of Education since 2010.

In his resignation letter, Roomsburg stated, “I am so sorry to say, that as of Friday, January 12, 2018, I am resigning my position on the school board.  I have given all that I have and can no longer put myself, or my family, through the stress that comes with this position.  Thank you for all of your support throughout this journey.  I can only hope that the person who fills my position next can do a better job for all of you.”

The process and timeline for filling a vacated Board of Education seat is governed by Michigan Election Law, and the Oakridge Board Bylaws.  The Michigan Election Law defines how a seat is determined vacated, the timeline for filling the seat, and the qualifications for a replacement board member.

The qualifications for a replacement board member are as follows:

  1. Must be a registered voter in the school district,
  2. Must be at least 18 years of age,
  3. Must be a U.S. citizen,
  4. Must be a resident of Michigan for at least 30 days.

This vacancy is effective as of January 12, 2018.  The remaining seated members of the Oakridge Public Schools Board of Education are required to appoint a candidate to fill this vacancy within 30 days of the effectiveness date of the vacancy (February 11, 2018).

This appointment will be in effect until the next regularly scheduled election, of which will be the November, 2018 ballot.  The winner of that election will immediately fill the remainder of the 6-year term, which expires December 31, 2020.

Applications can be picked up at the Administration Office of Oakridge Public Schools at 275 S. Wolf Lake Road, Muskegon, Michigan, 49442.  Completed applications can be mailed to or dropped off to the same address “Attn: Board Vacancy”.  Applications must be received by noon on Friday, January 26, 2018 to be considered.

A special board meeting will be scheduled to consider all candidates after all applications are received. This meeting will be open to the public.
