Thursday, January 31, 2019
Oakridge Staff and Community:
I really thought Friday would be the day we would all return to school. The Governor’s State of Emergency concludes tonight and the Winter Storm Warning concludes at 7 pm tonight. However, the roads are a sheet of packed snow and ice and will not change between now and morning. Salt is still not working on roads, parking lots, or sidewalks. I am not confident that we can get kids to/from school safely whether they are walking, riding the bus, or parent drop off. Our first priority and commitment is to the safety and wellness of our staff and students. I simply cannot risk their safety in these conditions.
Enjoy the SuperBowl on Sunday! Monday is forecasting 40+ degrees and will likely be a slushy mess on roads and playgrounds but safe for school to be in session. I will also be sharing an Eagle News Weekly on Sunday evening with our usual Week at a Glance to help you keep track of your schedule for the coming week.
For those on social media…check out our #SnowDayChallenge2019 on Facebook and Twitter. To help with ‘cabin fever’, we posted something fun to break up the monotony of the numerous snow days. Post your own Snow Day Video and win gift cards from some sponsors that stepped forward. The grand prize winners will receive a $50 gift card to Barnes and Noble, $50 gift card to K2 Pizza, $50 Target gift card, $25 Wesco gift card, and free movie night and pop/popcorn at the Grand Haven 9 for the group. The most recent post was by teacher Brittany Stroud singing “Windchills in Negative Places” (Garth Brooks parody). Go to www.facebook.com/OakridgePS or, if your not on Facebook, check her out here.
We’ll remember this week for a long time…the Polar Vortex Week of 2019! I sincerely appreciate the understanding from students, staff, and the community. Snow days are not easy on families. We truly understand that. We try to make the right decisions for the safety of all. Your support and encouragement despite the challenges is appreciated.
Schedule is also available on our website . Any changes to evening activities and events (including athletic events) will be communicated via our website (Headlines) and social media.
