Our District

Statement to Community

Dear Oakridge Community,

About a month ago, an Oakridge student and his family were victims of a hate crime. Even though this crime did not take place on school grounds, it hurt one of our school families.

News media have reported that the actions of this arsonist were directly connected to a picture posted on social media in February. As I stated on Facebook on February 20, a routine student investigation concluded with no charges nor disciplinary action.

The crime committed against this family is unacceptable, and will not be tolerated by our school community.

I am outraged by the way this student and his family have been treated. No child should have to experience this kind of traumatic threat. I am relying on the courage of this community to pull together to support one of its own. This kind of violence and destruction has no place here.

It takes an entire community to build a safe and healthy place for our children to grow, learn, and live. I encourage anyone with any information to call the Silent Observer Hotline at (231)-722-CRIME.

Sincerely,

Tom Livezey
Superintendent
