Governor Whitmer has ordered public schools in the State of Michigan to close through April 13, 2020

Oakridge Families,

Bridge Magazine has reported some information related to what the Governor may put in her next Executive Order related to schools. I expect Governor Whitmer’s executive order as soon as this Thursday. Here is what Bridge Magazine reports. I’ll let you read it for yourself as it speculates the content of the EO.

As I shared in my video yesterday on Facebook, we will need time to digest the EO before providing clarity and guidance for what this means for Oakridge.

Free or Low Cost Internet for Qualifying Families:

  • In response to COVID-19 developments, some internet providers are offering free services to low-income families and households with students.  Please visit the technology page on the Learning at Home Website – (technology section) for qualifying opportunities.

NOTE #1: Per Federal approval, Oakridge will serve up to two meals (breakfast/lunch) per day per student to all children ages 18 and under for FREE. This includes students with disabilities ages 18-26 with an active IEP. This will continue throughout the Governor’s School Shutdown.

NOTE #2: Local restaurants/nonprofits desiring to provide dinners to students who have been identified by Oakridge staff as food insecure in their home, may contact Melissa Corbitt at 788-7525 Monday – Friday 10am – 2pm to coordinate such efforts.

  • Egelcraft Mobile Home Park – 2129 Arrowhead Dr.
    Our school bus will be parked near the clubhouse near the intersection of Ironwood Ct and Arrowhead Dr.
  • Apple Carr Village – 516 Courtland Lane
    Our school bus will be parked in the open space in the new vacant north section along Braeburn Drive.  Traffic should enter from Hall Rd., proceed south on Braeburn Drive to approach our school bus. Then, continue down Braeburn after meal pick up.
  • Maple Island Estates – 7321 White Rd.
    Our school bus will be parked near the Birch Tree St. entrance.
  • Oakridge High School – Bus loop
    Please enter the bus loop and drive toward the school bus at the end of the loop to obtain the meals then exit onto Hall Rd.
  • Holiday Park – 5700 Vine Ave.
    Take South Wolf Lake Rd. to Vine Ave.  Our school bus will park on the dirt loop near buildings.  Traffic can enter the dirt drive near the softball field then pull up towards the bus to obtain meals.  Cars can exit using the entrance closest to S. Wolf Lake Rd.
  • Jibson Immanuel Baptist Church – 7960 Evanston Ave.
    Traffic should enter the Church parking lot from Evanston then pull through the lot to the school bus to pick up meals, then exit on S. Sullivan Rd.

Purpose:
Create and publish communication of district Task Force efforts during the Governor’s School Shutdown. Solicit and respond to community questions and requests for information.

FAQ for Oakridge Public Schools

Q #1:  What did the Governor announce?
A #1:  Governor Gretchen Whitmer announced that in order to slow the spread of Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) in Michigan, she is ordering the closure of all K-12 school buildings, public, private, and boarding, to students starting Monday, March 16 until Sunday, April 5. Governor Whitmer has also issued an Executive Order temporarily closing all non-essential businesses and suspending all non-essential travel.

Q #2:  Will employees get paid during the Governor’s Shutdown?
A #2:  Salary and hourly employees will be paid for their regularly assigned hours beginning on Monday, March 15 through Thursday, April 2.  

Q #3:  Will Oakridge have Spring Break as scheduled?
A #3:  The “shelter-in-place” order extends over Spring Break. Students and staff are currently scheduled to return to school Monday, April 13 which will be a “Late Start PD Day”.  

Q #4:  Are employees allowed to use their classroom/workspace during the Governor’s Shutdown?
A #4:  No, the Governor’s Executive Order directs people to stay home unless they are a ‘critical infrastructure worker’ or necessary to sustain or protect life or to conduct minimum basic operations.  The exception is volunteers preparing/distributing meals for students.  Critical infrastructure workers include the technology support staff who will keep our security and communications systems fully operational.  Our maintenance staff will keep our basic minimal facility infrastructure operational including accepting shipments of supplies.  Our custodial staff will be disinfecting every square foot of our facilities. Our business office staff will process bill payments and payroll.  All others shall stay home.

Q #5: Will Oakridge provide breakfast and lunch during the Governor’s Shutdown?
A #5: Yes, Oakridge has begun providing meals to all students.  See section above under “Task Force for Meal Provision.”

Q #6: Will we still be able to have our contractors here working on performance and bond items?
A #6:  No. Bond and Performance Contract work is on hold due to the Executive Order against travel.

Q #7: Are all athletic sports stopped until after Spring Break and does this include practices?
A #7: Yes.  All games and practices are canceled until after Spring Break.

Q #8: Will the end of the 3rd Marking Period for Oakridge Middle and High School still be March 27th?
A #8: No.  But adjustments have not been determined yet.

Q #9: Will any online instruction take place?
A #9:  Superintendent Tom Livezey has established a Task Force for Student Engagement, led by the Director of Academic Programs Pollie Gilchrist, to develop enriching learning and family engagement opportunities for students to experience during the Governor’s School Shutdown.  We will not require students to complete such learning experiences, and therefore, students’ grades will not be impacted. However, if a teacher provided an assignment that already had a due date during the Shutdown or soon after the Shutdown is over, such students should utilize this time accordingly. Q #10: Will this push back the end of school further into summer?
A #10: It is still too early to determine if the school year will be extended due to the Governor’s School Shutdown or if it might be extended.  The Legislature has discussed bills forgiving school days during the Governor’s School Shutdown but those bills are still under consideration.

Q #11: My K-6 student needs a device to access the District’s online resources during the shutdown.
A #11: Oakridge was able to fulfill one order of devices for K-6 parents through a “drive-in” check out on Friday, March 20 at the Upper Elementary. Unfortunately, travel for this purpose is no longer allowed during the Stay Safe, Stay Home Executive Order and we can no longer offer this service.

Q #12: Are we requested to still hold planned IEPs?
A #12:  The Federal Office of Special Education Programs (OSEP) is still in the process of developing guidance in terms of IEP due dates and evaluation timelines.  As soon as we get this information, we will share it. At this time, ESU guidance is for all IEPs and evaluations to be placed on hold until school resumes.  

We are asking that case managers reach out to all the families that have scheduled special education meetings (IEPs, REEDs, PBSP, initials, re-evaluations, etc) during the time of our school closures.  At this time, we ask that you let families know that we will work to reschedule these meetings upon the reopening of school.  

Q #13:  Will the Teen Health Center be open while school is closed?
A #13:  The Oakridge Teen Health Center announced that it is being closed down its physical office until at least March 30th, per a recommendation from the CDC. The Health Center does have councilors available to students through telephone. Schedule an appointment by calling 231-733-6830.

Q #14. Will the Boys and Girls Club stay open?
A #14. No.

Q #15:  Will Oakridge continue to help with hygiene products and individual needs of at-risk students?
A #15:  Yes, please contact Shelby Mangan at smangan@oakridgeschools.org 

Q #16:  Will Muskegon County interschool mail operate during the Governor’s Shutdown?
A #16:  Interschool mail delivery will be suspended Monday, March 16th through Friday, April 3rd.   If you have items for the MAISD Business Office, please scan/email them. The MAISD will be in the office on a limited basis but will have access to email and voicemail.

Q #17:  Will kids be taking the MSTEP State assessments in April?
A #17:   U.S. Secretary of Education Betsy Devos announced that students impacted by school closures due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic can bypass standardized testing for the 2019-2020 school year. Upon a proper request, the Department will grant a waiver to any state that is unable to assess its students due to the ongoing national emergency, providing relief from federally mandated testing requirements for this school year.  Michigan has submitted its waiver request.

Q #18:  What about prom, Close Up, Chicago Trip, etc?
Q #18:  The following trips are still scheduled as of the time of this FAQ.  It is too early to determine to cancel.  

  • April 17 – 8th Grade Chicago Trip 
  • April 22 – Chicago Trip
  • April 25 – Prom
  • April 26 – Spring Band Concert @ OHS
  • April 28 thru May 3 – Disney Trip (Band & Choir)
  • May 2 thru May 8 – Close Up trip to Washington DC
  • May 17 – Pop’s Choir Concert @ OHS
  • May 21 – Senior Cedar Point trip
  • May 31 – Graduation (LC Walker Arema
  • June 2 – Senior Mystery Trip
  • June 4 – Fusion Graduation (MS Auditorium)

Q #19: Does the district have any resources on how to speak with kids about COVID-19?
A #19: Please download such guidance here.

Q #20:  How are seniors going to graduate?
A #20:   On March 20, Governor Whitment made a press release giving some guidance on this topic.  She said, “I will be working in the coming days to ensure our seniors graduate and that no child is held back as a result of our ability to provide face-to-face instruction during the COVID-19 school closure.”  This press release was a response to the State Superintendent’s press release, which recommended specific action by the Legislature, including a statement, “With this public health emergency growing, the legislature will need to relax Michigan Merit Curriculum high school graduation requirements, teacher and administrator evaluation requirements, and other legal requirements.  It will also need to ensure that all public school employees, salaried and hourly; all contracted service providers, instructional and non-instructional; and all substitute staff members be paid during this period of emergency. This is an unprecedented time.”

Again, no actions or decisions were actually made by these statements.  Rather, it provides a vision of what should occur and how to get it done.

Q #21:  When will Spring sports resume?
A #21:  The Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA) has directed all member schools to suspend activities in all sports for all seasons — effective Monday, March 16 through at least Monday, April 13 — to fall in line with Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s order that all schools close/suspend travel statewide to deter the spread of COVID-19.

All athletic activities to be halted include practices, scrimmages, and competitions/games, as well as strength training, conditioning, and any other organized sessions and activities in all MHSAA in-season and out-of-season sports.
