Monday, May 15, 2017
Originally from the Muskegon area, Mr. Derezinski attended the Oakridge Schools from K-8th grades. He transferred to Muskegon Catholic Central High School (because Oakridge High School did not exist at the time).
During his Senior year of high school, Mr. Derezinski was drafted to the Vietnam War, and served in the 101st Airborne Division. When he returned from the Vietnam War, he attended Central Michigan University to become a teacher. He worked for Oakridge Public Schools as a Janitor, a teacher, and eventually Business Manager of the Oakridge School District. (He actually put the funding together to build what is now known as Oakridge High School.) Mr. Derezinski went on to become a Township Supervisor of Egleston Township, and was elected as County Commissioner. During that time, he was one that helped to establish the Muskegon Bike Time event.
During his service to our country, Mr. Derezinski earned the Bronze Star for Bravery, was wounded twice and has two Purple Heart medals.
Mr. Derezinski was invited into Oakridge High School to speak to the high school history classes about his experiences in the Vietnam War where he shared stories and photos with the classes.
Thank you, Mr. Derezinski, for your service to our country and to our local community.
