More than just an honor roll, NHS serves to honor those students who have demonstrated excellence in the areas of Scholarship, Leadership, Service, and Character. These characteristics have been associated with membership in the organization since its beginning in 1921. Today, it is estimated that more than one million students participate in activities of the NHS. NHS chapters are found in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, many U.S. Territories, and Canada. Chapter membership not only recognizes students for their accomplishments, but challenges them to develop further through active involvement in school activities and community service. Membership is an honor bestowed upon a student and selection is made by the sole determination of our Faculty Council. Membership is based upon outstanding scholarship, character, leadership, citizenship, and service as outlined below. Membership Criteria Service: This quality is defined through the voluntary contributions made by a student to the school or community, done without compensation and with a positive, courteous, and enthusiastic spirit. Members are required to complete service hours and to regularly participate in one or more service projects during the course of the school year. Leadership: Student leaders are those who are resourceful, good problem solvers, promoters of school activities, idea-contributors, dependable, and persons who exemplify positive attitudes about life. Leadership experiences can be drawn from school or community activities while working with or for others. Members are active participants in the school or community program and demonstrate the leadership qualities above through the school or community programs that the member is involved with. Character: The student of good character upholds principles of morality and ethics, is cooperative, demonstrates high standards of honesty and reliability, shows courtesy, concern, and respect for others, and generally maintains a good and clean lifestyle. Any violation throughout a student’s high school career of the academic integrity honor code, as stated on page 5 of the student handbook, may result in a student’s denial as a member in NHS or additional loss of academic honors. Citizenship: The student who demonstrates citizenship understands the importance of civic involvement, has a high regard for freedom, justice, and democracy, and demonstrates mature participation and responsibility through involvement with such activities as scouting, community organizations, and school clubs. Scholarship: The national minimum standard for scholarship shall be a cumulative scholastic average of at least 85%, B, 3.00 grade point average, or the equivalent standard of excellence.
