Wednesday, May 9, 2018
This summer, current eighth graders are invited to explore a wide variety of careers from June 18 to 21, 2018, at the Muskegon Area Career Tech Center. The newly revamped “Eighth Grade Career Camp” was designed to give students a fun and more intentional career development experience as they prepare to enter high school.
Since 2006, the Career Center has offered summer career-exploration classes for middle school students. While the old program only allowed students to choose up to two career-related classes, the new Career Camp exposes students to four different careers– a new career each day! Students can choose from the following: Dose of Medicine, Animal Planet, Auto Collision Repair, Building for Beginners, Computer-Aided Design, CNC Machining Boot Camp, Got Ink?, Cybersecurity with Raspberry Pi, Engines 101, Hospitality & Tourism, and Welding Technology.
In “A Dose of Medicine” eighth graders will learn about career opportunities available in the healthcare field.
“Engines 101” participants will build their own model engine as they learn about automotive careers.
“Building for Beginners” will teach students about construction careers as they build their own small project.
According to Career Center Student Outreach Specialist Stephanie Hoekenga, changes in the program were based on a recent survey of parents in Muskegon County. “Of parents surveyed, 99% feel it is important for teens to participate in career-development activities before they graduate from high school,” said Hoekenga. “Eighth Grade Career Camp is part of a natural progression of career-development activities that include attending a MiCareerQuest career fair in ninth grade, touring Career Center programs in tenth grade, and having the ability to enroll in career-related coursework that includes internships at the Career Center their junior and senior years,” she added.
Career Camp takes place June 18 to 21, 2018 from 8:30 a.m.–3:00 p.m. with a lunch break from 11:30 a.m.–12:00 p.m. Tuition for the week is $50. Catered lunch is available for an additional $25 for the week or students may bring a sack lunch.
